Tour of the Supreme Court – 14 May
Kathy Callaghan escorted a group of about 20 members on the train down to Wellington to tour the Supreme Court building and the adjoining old High Court Building. The Supreme Court building was officially opened in January 2010 by Prince William, and is impressive both for its recycled brass external screen and the Kauri cone-shaped Southland beech and copper courtroom within. We were also taken through the adjoining old High Court building, which had lain empty since 1993 for 14 years before major restoration took place – including base isolators for seismic protection. This building now houses offices and is used only for ceremonial occasions, but still features the holding cells in the basement. Thanks Kathy for organising another interesting tour!
