Free websites and resources for genealogy research

New Zealand

New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG) – Promotes the study of family histories, whakapapa, genealogies and kindred subjects.
NZSG Genealogical Computing Group – The GCG ‘s special interest is using computers for genealogy. 
NZSG Maori Interest Group – Assists in researching whakapapa, builds up a store of Maori resources in the NZSG and informs about the records available and how to access and interpret them.
Wellington City Archives – Holds physical and digitised records dating back to 1840. They include building permits, consents and other property information and show changes in the city.
Wellington City Library – Heritage and Local History – Archive resources on the history of Wellington.
Department of Internal Affairs – Births, Deaths and Marriages Online – Search access for NZ birth, marriage and death records.
NZ Ancestor Search Helper – This search tool is designed to assist with NZ focused genealogical research, by collating results from NZ DIA’s Births, Deaths and Marriages, Archives NZ, dozens of council cemetery websites, military records from Auckland Museum Online Cenotaph and many other online history resources.
Wilson Collection – Includes records from many and varied sources to assist with NZ genealogy research.
Papers Past – Delivers digitised full-text New Zealand and Pacific newspapers, magazines and journals, books, and other formats.
Kapiti Births – Index and Scrapbook.

Australia

National Archives of Australia – Australian government records.
Trove – Search for digital copies of newspapers, Government Gazettes, maps, magazines and newsletters. Also books, pictures, photographs, archived websites, music and interviews.

England

Civil Registration Records – FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records.
Parish Records – FreeREG is to provide free internet searches of UK baptism, marriage, and burial parish records.
Census records – FreeCEN provides a free-to-view, online, searchable database of 19th century UK census returns.

Wales

Civil registration records – The Indexes to the Civil Records of Irish births, deaths and marriages date from 1864 with non-Roman Catholic marriages recorded from 1845.
Church records – Roman Catholic, Church of Ireland and Presbyterian records.
Census records – Census of Ireland 1901/1911 and census fragments and substitutes, 1821-51.
Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) – The official archive for Northern Ireland.
